So far in this process, you should have gained a large collection of ideas and examples. How do you relate to them?

How will you investigate your research questions?

After the observation assignment from last week, commencing our first research, this session had the goal of exchanging our methods to motivate ourselves in exploring a topic. For myself, I approach research in an immersed, theoretical, and explorative way, as I tend to act as a sponge that absorbs every piece of knowledge till I feel a deeper understanding of the subject is reached. I allow myself to drift, from one piece of information to the next, following links between them and creating a “net” of terms and concepts.

Think of everything as a child. Collecting personal data. Use the workbook as a joyfulness place to explore your research. Methods for joyfulness in research & process, Individual motivation, fast decisionmaking Low-fi-prototype. Playing with time. It being a performance. A couple of methods we collected during the class discussion, I highlighted them, because I found them fitting to my mode of researching topics.

In the second part of the session, we got grouped up to discuss possible methods of investigation for answering our research questions. Together with Alessia, I found many similarities in our questioning, especially regarding the motivation, joy and hurdles of design processes, and how tools and methods could be used to improve the status quo. Furthermore, we gathered some methods we both felt fitting to our questions.

participatory design, working together with designers / non-designers to find possible points of engagement, prototype tools / methods, test and refine them in co creation.

auto-etnography, exploring the design process, especially in regard of tool use, motivation in process and modifying tools.

ethnography in exploring the process of creative development, loss of creativity / embracing creativity

prototyping, exploring the process of intrinsic motivation in creation through doing it.
